Novel Notion, #1

Novel Notion is a new discussion based meme hosted by Chapter Chicks, who were inspired by The Readables. You can find out more information, and also join in on the discussion here.

This discussion topic is: 'Y Ya?' and 'Reading outside of your designated age group'.

Okay, so, Why YA you ask? I don't just read young adult fiction. I read Adult books as well, with the very occasional middle-grade novel mixed in there. You may see me with mostly YA books in my hand, and on my shelf, but I do like some Adult genres as well.

I have many reasons of why I read young adult books. One of the main reasons is because I am considered a young adult and I can relate better with them, I guess. Now, just because I say that I am considered young adult and that I love to read young adult doesn't mean that I think you have to be a young adult to be able to read the genre, because that's not true. I think anyone should be able to read young adult books who enjoy them.

Just because there are labels for books like: Childrens, Middle-Grade, Young-Adult, and Adult, doesn't mean that I think someone should ONLY read the books in the categories they are considered. I think everyone should be able to read what they like and not be judged by it.

Yes, I relate better to Young-Adult books because I am a Young Adult and can really relate to the Young-Adult characters, and Young-Adult books are more realistic (Even if they have those awesome vampires, werewolves, angels, dragons, shapeshifters, witches, etc. in them.)than Adult books.

Yes, I'd much rather read a book that has fantasy/paranormal elements in it, and all the categories have these things in them in some books, but Young-Adult books just seem to have those elements AND have real problems in them.

Who would want to ALWAYS read books that have everyday things in them? With no fantasy?

And about the whole "Stereotype" thing. I HATE them. I'm not going to mention any of them because there are so many that I feel naming just a few won't get the whole thing out. All I'm going to say is: Don't judge someone by what they are reading. Don't assume that just because they are picking up a certain book that it is for another reason other than the fact that they may just want to read it for fun!

I'm sorry that I haven't done well in explaining my thoughts on the discussion. I'm not very good at it most of the time, but I really wanted my two-cents in.

If you have any questions on my thoughts on the discussion, please ask! And please tell me what your thoughts are. I'd love to hear them!

  1. I read YA and I'm an adult..most of the time and I get those odd looks sometimes but I'm beyond it and just enjoy what I read.

  2. I agree with you completely! There are so many kinds of books out there because people have a lot of interests. That's the point. :D

  3. I loved this post! I hate getting judged for reading YA, and I just wanna shake people and say, "WAKE UP. I can just as easily judge you for what you read, or the fact that you don't read at all." Doesn't mean that my initial reaction is the right one.

There is just something about YA that evens out real with paranormal that I just don't think any other genre has mastered yet.
